Suvlaki Soho - No Booking
On a bustling (as usual) Tuesday evening in Soho, My friend anD i found ourselves roaming Old Compton St, looking for a place to eat without a booking. After Making a left on Greek St, Greek food suddenly sounded tempting. It was just my luck that upon turning left on Bateman St, we found ourselves in front of Suvlaki.
It was, as always, with dread, that I enquired about a free table, and it was just my luck that two seats were free by the window.
Tightly squeezing in between a table and the window, sitting on stools, we were greeted by friendly staff and promptly given the menus.
As always, when deciding on drinks, I look for local fare, or from the country where the restaurant’s cuisine hail’s from. I hence chose a refreshing bottle of Fix Lager (£6.40), which came with a chilled metal mug, a nice touch offering a different drinking experience than a classic pint.
Tzatziki - £4.40
For starters, we ordered the tzatziki, which came with pita bread (although if you’re sharing I’d recommend ordering some extra pitas for an additional £2.80).
It was Lovely, refreshing and creamy. you cant go wrong with tzatziki, and it was a well-made staple. The extra pitas allowed us to have it last as a side throughout the meal.
corn-fed chicken wrap - £8.70
When a restaurant is named after a dish, I tend to order It. In this case, the main event was the souvlaki, which had to be the corn-fed chicken wrap for me.
There were plenty of options and I did hesitate with the Spicy prawn (there is also a vegetarian option), but that day I decided on the chicken.
Wrapped into a branded sheet of paper, and a fluffy flatbread, the chicken was cooked to perfection, juicy, tender and full of the wonderful Greek flavours I had smelled as soon as I entered the restaurant. The mix of textures between bread, chicken, salad and sauce brought the dish together and made it more than a lovely snack.
Suvlaki is an interesting place. from the outside, it may seem like any fast Greek restaurant, but the attention to detail, and the atmosphere created make it Feel like a corner of Greece in the West End. The service was quick, the staff wEre lovely and the food was delicious. Whether you’re starving after a long day, fuelling up for a night out or just wanting to have some nice Greek food and refreshing drinks with friends (they also offer Loux lemonade, a guilty pleasure of mine), Suvlaki is a great place to go, with or without a booking (it’s worth the tight squeeze). I will absolutely return to Suvlaki.
